Some
thirty kilometres east of Pretoria is a ridge of rocky outcrops that
form a range of low mountrains. It was amongst these outcrops that a
3106 ct giant diamond was discovered prtruding from the wall of an area
of a Kimberlite pipe that was being mined. The surface manager
of the mine, Frederick Wells discovered the stone on January 26, 1905.
Today the mine is still active on a 42 ha area and still the Premier
Diamond Mining Company produces good quality gemstone diamonds.
The tour includes a visit to the active shaft as well as a visit to the
diamond cutting and polishing works.
